The keeping of so-called domestic dogs within the confines of suburbia is both unnatural and cruel. The extreme popularity of dogs as neighborhood pets cannot alter this fact or excuse it.
Because of the dog's natural submissiveness to its pack leader the owner, as the poor dog's substitute pack leader, sees this as his animal's love for him and he becomes so addicted to it that he can hardly bear to be without it.
This example of extreme selfishness, regardless of suffering to creatures born to free range, is well explained by Dr Sam Vaknin here "Why do we love animals?"
